Wolves new signing close to completion

Wolverhampton Wanderers are moving closer to signing Charlton' striker Chris Iwelumo, with the club saying the are on the verge of completing a deal.

The 29 year old, 30 this month ended last season as the Addicks top scorer, on 10 goals and is surplus to Alan Pardew's requirements, but not Mick McCarthy's apparently.

Wolves fans are divided on the transfer. Nothing new there then, although this one does seem to be a bit of a puzzler.

We all know that the club have a policy of chasing multiple targets, wise in this day and age, but that usually implies a like for like policy.

Aaron McLean - Chris Iwelumo. Lets compare.

One is a 25 year old up and comming player who has scored 78 goals in 9 seasons, the other a 30 year old who has scored 71 goals in 12.

Iwelumo is a 6'4' target man, McLean is 5'8'.

McLean's club are desperate to hang onto him, Iwelumo has been made free to talk to interested parties.

We're not usually questioning or critical of the clubs transfer market activities, but this latest move has left us scratching our heads a little, after initially being thought a windup.

Whatever the reason, the decision is Mick McCarthy's, and there is nohing left to do other than trust he has a cunning plan as far as Iwelumo goes.

And wait for the start of the season to find out what it is.
