Confidence tricks

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has issued a vote of confidence in his back line ahead of the weekends match with Preston North End.

Why? Because it would appear that the recall of Michael Mancienne to Chelsea hs been treated like some kind of death blow in some quarters.

True, it was nice while he was here.

But he wasn't a force of one holding things together while others fell to pieces.

'I took Mancienne because of how good he is and because he was available at that time.

'I don't think I have to justify that reason at all.' he told the club's official site.

'I didn't say there was anything wrong with anyone else, but I thought those two (Mancienne and Stearman) would be a very good partnership and I've been proved right.'

With Richard Stearman now having done much to silence his initial knockers and Neill Collins performing a similar trick ,things are still looking pretty good at the back, which is exactly McCarthy's point.

Nothing was broken, nothing needs fixing, time to get over it.

Pragmatic to the last, but would you really expect anything else from Mick McCarthy?

We will miss him but not as much as some would make out. Our defence does have a few options this season for a change! I reckon there are a few positions with more need of reinforcement, particularly midfield. Can you imagine losing Henry? He may not be glamorous but he works his socks off for the cause. Rumours are circulating that we may have to recall Potter this weekend! Need I say more?
