'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The third man

Reports in todays redtops suggest Mick McCarthy has identified Calum Davenport as the missing link in his defensive puzzle.

It would be the third time McCarthy has raided the ranks of the Hammers this transfer window.

Capped at U19,19 and 21 levels for England, the much travellled 26 year old has a checkered history of injuries and loans since becoming Coventry City's Young Player Of the Year in his first full season.

Spells at West Ham and Tottenham were then peppered with temporary stays at Watford, Norwich, Southampston racking up 143 appearances across 8 seasons.

If it came down to a straight choiceof spending £3 million on 6'3 Davenport or Hearts captain Christophe Berra, the answer would definitely have to be the highly tipped former.

If we're going to spend that kindo f money, i want it to be on someone whose played at the kind of levels davenport has, and not been found wanting.

Rumour or fact, we'll have to wait and see.

But at least now the signs are encouraging.
