Wolves can be bigger than Villa

Mick McCarthy has been described as the man to lead Wolves back into Europe and make them "bigger than Villa." - Express & Star

To visit the Vital Wolves message board, click here.

In a statement that is likely to get the attention of Villa fans everywhere, including Vital Football's own Mr Fear, Dave Mitchell the man who now manages Perth Glory believes that Wolves can be bigger than Villa.

The comments come in the Express & Star just as his Perth Glory side kick off against Wolves down under (we hope to bring you match updates during the game on our forum).

"People talk about Aston Villa being a massive club and they`re bigger than Wolves at the minute, but I think Wolves have the potential to be bigger.' said Mitchell, who McCarthy signed when at Millwall.

"First and foremost, they`ve got to establish themselves in the Premier League, then become the biggest club in the Midlands by challenging in that top eight - where you can be involved in Europe.

"It`s possible because Fulham have done it and that`s where you want to go."

Bold statement indeed, but certainly a confidence boost to McCarthy's men ahead of the new season.

Villa are a team seen to be in free-fall at the moment following them throwing away a decent chance of Champions League Football last season.

If Wolves get off to a decent start this term and emulate Hull's first part of the season last year, is it inconceivable that Wolves could finish above Villa this season?

Vital Wolves Comment: Now Villa fans play nice on this one! Let us know what you think (minus the insults) either on the article comments below or on the forum.

Seen to be in freefall? There was me thinking that we'd just consolidated ourelves as a top six team. Hmm.

This is the funniest article I have read in a long while but seriously Kidderminster Harriers could be a bigger team than Villa, all they have to do is get out of the Conference, get promoted from League two to League One, League One to the Championship, the Championship to the Prem, stay in the Prem (not get relegated after just one season!!!!), establish themselves as a mid-table team, establish themselves in the top 8, then in the top 6 and achieve Champions League football and then they'll be the biggest team in the Midlands, easy

'Oh come on, even I thought you had a good chance of making the top 4 last year and you blew big style.' - Does that mean we're in freefall? I'd say Newcastle are more into falling freely than us.

Um, a lot of work for Wolves before they're bigger than Villa, I'd suggest. Perhaps it's the power of positive thinking, who knows. And yeah, the 'free fall' line is a bit odd!

ok if you want to be in competition with Newcastle, then yes they win the biggest bottlers award for last season.

LOL, You've got to overtake WBA and the Bloose first. And what has Fulham got to do with anything. Are they now bigger than Gooners, Spuz, Chelsea or even Westaaam. YOYO

We've heard it all before. "We're going to be bigger than the Villa!" *chuckles*. Albion said it last year and look where they ended up! Blues said it the season before - 'nuff said. Seriously though - good luck!

I honestly hope Wolves stay up this year and do well. Wolves could also be bigger than us but it just may take a few decades.

ha, spices up the season nicely! Talk is cheap I guess, think the Blues said similar. To be totally honest, we shouldn't be looking being bigger than local rivals and no other ambitious Midlands club should either. My focus is getting back to winning things ... not just winning local derbies. One off games can always go either way. Ho diddly hum is all I can say! Looking forward to the games though, never been much bad blood between the clubs and fans I don't think!

Nothing wrong with ambition! But seriously, best of luck this season Wolves, local derbies aside, I hope ye do well, good manager, and now that you have Kevin Doyle my neighbour, I will be watching you you when I can, and of course on your side when you play the Blue scum!
