Irish Wolves (and one maybe)

Written by Andrew Mccarten

The Republic of Ireland defeated South Africa-bound Paraguay in Dublin, 2-1, in large part due to the performance of 2 players; one currently with Wolves, and another widely considered to be on the way to the West Midlands.

Kevin Doyle finished smartly from close range, capitalizing on a loose ball to score his 8th goal in 34 appearances for Ireland.

The bright start continued at the other end of the half. Doyle turned provider this time, accurately deflecting a Damien Duff free kick towards Robbie Keane, who dummied, allowing Liam Lawrence to put in with a solid volley.

Lawrence vocally praised Wolves manager Mick McCarthy recently, in what was widely seen as a stated desire to join Wolves (see "Stoke Man Makes Plea to McCarthy").

It was Lawrence`s second goal in green in just his 4th appearance, after his stunning winner against South Africa, and his overall impressive performance should make McCarthy take notice, as well as underline his desire to become a regular for Euro 2012 qualifying.

Leaving Stoke City, and securing more first team football, should help him keep a starting spot.

Kevin Foley came on in the 82nd minute for Lawrence, as Trap sought to protect the lead, and played reasonably well for the time he was on, but not really enough to wait. He should figure more prominently when the Irish take on Algeria this Friday.
