Hennessey reclaims number 1 jersey

Much like around this time last year, Mick McCarthy has switched his goalkeepers.

Last season Marcus Hahnemann came in and replaced Wayne Hennessey as our number one shot-stopper and the switch was part of a number of changes that signalled an up turn in results and kept us in the Premier League.

Our Mick has once again pulled the same trick with Wayne Hennessey replacing Marcus Hahnemann for the recent win over Sunderland.

"I`ll be sticking with him. I wouldn`t have changed it again anyway but on his performance on Saturday, it would be ridiculous to do so because he made some really good saves.' McCarthy told the Express & Star.

Mick continued: "He was our No 1 - the best - but he had a tough time and Marcus came in. We haven`t had a clean sheet and we haven`t won games so I decided to change it.

"I think my decision was justified because Wayne played very well."

Vital Wolves Comment: Does this prematurely call time on Marcus Hahnemann's Wolves career?

The 38-year-old American's contract expires in the summer and I've seen rumours that he is considering a move to the MLS, perhaps he might consider a move in January ahead of the American season starting in March?

WE COULDNT KEEP A CLEAN SHEET COS OF THE WOEFUL PERFORMANCES OF CERTAIN DEFENDERS IN FRONT OF HIM. Mick makes my blood boil with idiotic statements like this... Wayne is a great talent, but think most will agree that he is not a big enough presence at the back, and we need someone shouting and screaming instruction ... and one iffy performance does not justify Marucs being dropped... this is Mick simply papering over the cracks a - it is so blindingly obvious. We are shipping goals for fun - in EVERY GAME - so Mick changes the keeper for ONE ERROR !!! Go shovel it elsewehere.. Mick, this numpty sees right through your BS Get us some defenders - and put USA BACK IN.

I agree with Ad Mant's basic proposition that any goalie would have trouble keeping a clean sheet with a dodgy defence in front of him ... and I have said enough about that. However, I think it might do USA some good to be out of the firing-line for a time. He has been a little off-form recently, though that is a relative term, given his customary high standard of play. If I were MM, I would not given such a hostage to fortune by declaring that Hennessey was his number one for the foreseeable future. He does have a tendency to flap under pressure and does not command the goal area in the same authorative way that USA does. Perhaps MM knows that Hahnemann aims to return home to the States and is easing Hennessey in. It will also stop him asking for a loan move.

Needs to be more vocal with his defenders and decide that when he is coming for a ball he keeps coming rather than changing his mind half way. Hopefully these things can be taught
