Damme shame for McCarthy

Mick McCarthy was quite philosophical following the departure of Jelle Van Damme to Standard Liege.

We all had high hopes for the 27-year-old Belgium international, but after a short few months, he's gone, much to the disappointment of McCarthy who thought he could have been a good signing.

"I like Jelle but even if there`s just one per cent of him not committed why would we keep him when we`ve got lads totally committed to it?' Mick told the Express & Star

He continued: "When he first came he did want to be here and when he played he gave his lot. He started in the team but got injured in the first game. And it`s just not worked out for him personally after that.

"Whether it`s family life or not, sometimes all the little things just add up to the fact that it just doesn`t work out. There was never any point trying to keep him to his contract but he`s never been a bad influence.'

Vital Wolves Comment: At least we recouped the transfer fee so did not miss out financially. Perhaps this will give Mick some spending money in January?

I would have been more upset at his departure, had he performed adequately in the position (left back) he was intended to fill. The friendlies quickly changed my mind but it worries me that the coaching and scouting staff did not pick up his limitations before making an offer. On the other hand, I thought that in time he might prove to be a good midfield enforcer in the Henry mould. Alternatively. he might have made it as a central defender, given his height and strength. Now, we shall never know.

Perhaps we will have some money in the transfer?? I think almost certainly we will have to make a splurge... and some of the names already being bandied about look quite promising. 2 Defenders please !

I wish him well. I thought he had the potential to make an impact, but even a large tattoed rough looking type can miss his family. Good luck Jelle, shame it didn't work out

Large rough, tatooed rough looking types??Oh that reminds me,my wife misses her family now we live overseas!!!.

He hardly gave it a chance though did he!! His wife didn't move over here while she was pregnant and now he's moved back now she's given birth. The hard period should have been over.

Nice to see that you are touch with your feminine side, Old Gold. Yours sensitively,
