McCarthy sticks by Stearman

Gaffer Mick McCarthy will continue to back Richard Stearman in the coming weeks.

In a way he doesn't really have much of a choice Jody Craddock is out for a further 2 months and Steven Mouyokolo has had one training session following injury.

Once Mouyokolo returns to fitness then we might have a bit of a battle for a starting spot between Stearman, Mouyokolo and Christophe Berra, but until then despite the mistakes we have to stick by Stearman.

"I think Stearman has done well since he`s come into the side," McCarthy told the Express & Star.

He continued: "I`m sure he wasn`t too happy with the first goal we conceded on Saturday [against Sunderland].

"He also gave the penalty away against Man City but he went on to play well in that game.

"He`s doing fine.

Vital Wolves Comment: Ideally I`d like to see us bolster the defence next month when the transfer window opens and give Stearman a chance to develop out of the limelight and criticism. At 23-years-old his best days are ahead of him.

I agree, Akela. I notice that the Express and Star's gloss on MM's vote of confidence was to list Stearman's blunders to date. The situation at the moment is hardly one to inspire confidence in our defence. Roll on January.

Mccarthy has to say this - he has no other options. Perhaps he will develop into a prem player, but we need someone now. As you say, Roll on January

Stearman is too clumsy and lacks concentration. i find myself thinking that he's had a solid game after an hour or so and then he makes a horrible mistake.. we need a centre-back, left-back and centre-midfielder in january.. and we should let jones go, aswell as halford, ward and edwards.
SmithyWolves
Championship is his level.
Wolf Man
Dont agree with what you say. Stearman is a better option than either Mouyokolo or the shirt-tugging Berra. Also what a contradiction by MM - he is meant to stick by Stears yet drops him for the Blackburn game and the defence plays really poorly....
astraltrader
I bet Stears had a wry smile on his face after the Blackburn game.

Okay, my last post did not hit so here we try again. I think Stearman is dealt a poor hand- he is one of those players who's mistakes are scrutinized whilst others get away with blue murder and no one bats an eye lid. I think he has a tremendous future ahead of him. Yes he makes some stupid mistakes. To put things into perspective I have always stuck up for both Stears and Berra but why should Berra walk straight back into the side which appears a given? Considering how many times I have stuck up for Berra I am well within my right to describe some of his defending at Blackburn as Sunday Pub League at best. We won the last game so why change it. Berra will start again on Saturday.
New York City Wolf
Good point NYCW. However, as your evaluation of Berra's performance in the Blackburn match is the same as mine, you will receive criticism from fans who were at the match.
