'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McCarthy in no doubt we deserved to win

Wolves took the bragging rights against Birmingham on Sunday.

But more importantly the three points brings us to within just one point of escaping the relegation drop zone.

Bonuses taken from the game was Stephen Hunt's second goal of the season and our first clean sheet!

'There's no doubt we deserved the victory. I would say their keeper was their star player, and I don't think Wayne Hennessey had too many saves to make.' McCarthy told the BBC after the game.

He was certainly right there! The match stats have shown that Birmingham only had three shots during the whole game, with NONE on target.

McCarthy added: 'We deserved the victory, it was a great clean sheet, and it helps everybody to feel better about themselves.

'I've spoken about the spirit in the camp, how it's good and optimistic, and I think it showed.

'With all the things that have gone wrong, it was set up for us to get beat, but the players weren't going to let it happen. They've been terrific.'

Vital Wolves Comment: Fantastic to get a clean sheet for the first time this season and what a match to get it in.

Bring on the Baggies.

Hats off to MM and the lads: a great victory against the odds. The team looked far more composed and threatening than it has done for some time. It was a fantastic performance and I was thrilled to be there to watch it. I am really pleased for Ward in particular. Now, if we can only get a decent left back to alleviate the pressure on him to occupy that position, he'll shine. Some of the crocks might have trouble getting back into the team. We out-played Birmingham and not just because their players were suffering from a group virus or an upset tummy. Well, not at first ... I bet they were feeling pretty sick by the end of the match (especially Kevin).

We can't rely on every team creating so little chances against us if we want to get another clean sheet any time soon though. :)

Akela: you're right, of course, and I made the same point in my report. But I wanted to congratulate the lads and make a positive statement. Hand on heart: aren't you happy too?
Southbank60
No more so than I was already southbank, as you know I always felt sticking with McCarthy was the right thing to do, but this result doesn't prove anything one way or the other, so my opinion or happiness hasn't changed with one result. We have to build on it, we have to continue to pick up the odd surprising result, but we also have to start winning the games we expect to win and then we can climb out of the bottom three. I'm not ready to claim I told you so just yet. :)

That's my position too, though I have often felt myself misunderstood. Perhaps one should expect it from one's wife but from fellow-supporters? Anway, wins against WBA and Wigan and you can start clearing your throat.
