'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Andy Gray & Richard Keys removed from MNF

Sky Sports have announced that presenters Andy Gray & Richard Keys will not be on their flagship Monday Night Football programme following their off-air comments before the Wolves V Liverpool game.

For those who missed the story, we had Sian Massey running the line at Molineux, one of very few female officials in the English game.

After hearing the news Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys commented off-air to fellow presenter Andy Gray and said: 'Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.'

Andy Gray quipped: 'women don't know the offside rule' and Richard Keys added: 'of course they don't'

To compound the comments, Richard Keys went on to add: 'See charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Yeah. Do me a favour, love,'

In a statement on the BBC Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: 'I have spoken directly to both Richard Keys and Andy Gray this morning.

'It has been made clear to each of them that their comments were totally unacceptable.

'As with any employee it would not be right to go into detail on those proceedings. However, they have been clearly warned about their behaviour and reminded of their responsibilities.

'In addition, Richard and Andy will not be involved in any way with tonight's live Monday Night Football.'

I was so high up in the stand on the other side of the pitch that I did not know that the linesman was a lineswoman (It could have been Andy Carroll moonlighting). We all thought that Meireles was offside but the cameraman informed us that the linesperson was right ... and she was. I believe Richard Keys and Andy Gray made their comment before the match so they should have apologized when she later proved that she was pretty cute at administering the offside law. Blame Zubes instead!

FIX - They should both be SACKED. If Ron Atkinson's career went down the drains due to the racist comments he made years ago - what makes this any different. Are they indispendable?
DaSPURS
lolololol They're dumb bums anyway. Using these old chauvinistic phrases just displays a seemingly lack of knowledge. In truth, we all come out with crap like that at times, in whatever direction - human nature, I guess. But as professionals who are representing to a global audience... I agree with DaSPURS. People have walked from lesser profile jobs for similar. Or is that too anal? They were surely taking the p1ss?? Women play professionally, ffs! Stuff it! Sack 'em!
jerkinmahjurgen
surely they're allowed to say whatever they like 'off-air' aren't they? i'm not saying i agree with what they said, and wether a woman should be a match official at a premier league game is a different discussion again.. but they are entitled to their opinions and there should be freedom of speech in private and off-air
SmithyWolves
This was off air and should not have been made public,a little bit like someone over hearing you speaking to someone else in private and them making your feelings public!.The person who 'stole' this recording should also be found and warned.I in no way condone what they said but they were talking to 'each other'and so it should have remained between the two of them.
Crete Wolf
Only saying what 99/100 people who watch football think! You should see some of them at grass root level!!
Stourbridge Villan
I see and hear a lot worse on the train every day. The most pathetic part of all this is that they have nothing to offer of greater intelligence. This is the kind of talk you would hear from two 80 year old's adjusting their flat caps in the local pub muttering to themselves drunk on half a pint of mild.
New York City Wolf
Me and Banksy springs to mind I bet NYC?
Crete Wolf
Not quite ... but almost.
Southbank60
Of course, while I might be muttering something on the lines of what about a couple of new defenders, it wouldn't be on the lines of a female linesperson. If a lady could solve our left back problem, I'd play her in the team straight away.
Southbank60
Would you feel the same if the remarks were racists Crete Wolf? Personally I think the remarks were outrageous, assume the respect campaign doesn't count because she's female? Forget the fact that shes done her training and passed the physical tests etc.
Akela
I don't think Crete Wolf meant it in that way, Akela. I am sure we both abhor such sexist attitudes, as exbited by AG and RK.
Southbank60
The subject matter does'nt make any difference Akela,my point remains the same,if you read what I said part of it says,"I in no way condone what they said",so no I dont agree with what they said but I also dont agree with the way that this story was obtained.I think the person who stole the tapes and probably sold them should also be suspended and punished.
Crete Wolf
That's a good point, Crete Wolf and, as you remind us, you emphasized the fact that you do not condone their views. However, unguarded asides like this reveal the true opinions of the people involved and should be acted upon. Do we really want sexist commentators like AG and RK in positions of influence, especially in football with its host of young fans? I hope the reponses don't tell me that I am wrong, though abusive messages will merely clinch my argument.
Southbank60
Well, Andy Gray has gone, sacked, it seems, not for the current incident but as a result of previous sexists comments and actions. It reinforces the point I made earlier that unguarded comments reveal the true opinions of a person. He deserved his fate.
Southbank60
He was playing his flute to the tune of arrogance for far too long anyway- he had the chance to manage Everton years ago remember and Sky felt forced for some reason to offer him silly money. A true football man would have put his balls on the line at the expense of potential failure but no he took the money, he's got enough so I doubt this will bother him. Ignorance if rife, I stand by my assertion that you hear worse walking down the high street but yes, they are in a position of power and you expect such to conduct themselves accordingly.
New York City Wolf
Southbank is spot on and was the point I was trying to make, I don't care how the information comes about, these are his views, trying to claim that it shouldn't count because he said it in private is basically claiming that it's ok to be sexist or a racist as long as you do it quietly.
Akela
Ive heard it all now Southbank and Akela ... Next you will want some Orwellian monitoring system sniffing out evil words and gestures or the thought police coming round and booking you for imagining Nigella naked... Racist/Sexis/homophobic comments are not the only ones that can offend, so when do we start castigating people for words that are, say, Anti-french / german / welsh even.. words that offend fat people, or anorexics, people from middle America, Mexicans... Japanese or Chinese impersonations... all of these can offend... Where do you draw the line. Language is subjective, just about anything can offend in some way or another, because people choose how they are going to interpret every single word / image / sound that comes into their head... and its all up for interpretation, depending on what mood you are in at the time These 2 were buffoons to slag people off whilst on duty (and by people I mean anyone - not just the ones this nanny state and its meagre minded minority choose to select as exempt) and they have paid the price, but to suggest that no one should ever utter, or even think of any thoughts that might not be considered un-PC is bloody insane. The real world is quite a long distance away, if you genuinely believe so.
Ad Mant
Come on, Ad Mant, AG and RK were well out of order in what purports to be an enlightened age ... and they seemed to revel in it. I have two daughters, both of whom have suffered from the sexist behaviour of loutish blokes. Indeed, it would not an exaggeration to say that one of my daughters has had her life blighted because of it and it certainly affected her career plans. It wasn't the case of a single aberration on the part of the two 'lads' but the latest incident of an unfolding pattern. Good riddance to them!
Southbank60
To be fair to him, when he signed in 1979, Andy Gray did say he was gonna end his career at Molineux
simonfire1
Ha! Ha!
Southbank60
If he thinks he is going to pitch a tent on the edge of the 18 Ward box at Molineux he can think again and take his bitch with him. ... The Lady & The Tramp. In my own interests I should run a poll as to who gets that joke, otherwise, I'll buy a spade and roam the streets with Keys. With his aftermath comments I suggest he might just consider changing his name to Richard Coleman. Then again, considering his obvious array of talents he would probably amount such wealth he would attract the welcome/unwelcome interests of a gold digger. Without counting, I counted at least six jokes right there.
