'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Don't blame the formation

It's the age old discussion point, why a formation should or didn't work.

For us down the pub, we can discuss the merits of a formation from the first pint, past the crisps and on to the second, third and fourth pint after a game.

We are all experts in our own mind and to us everything can either be blamed or praised on the system used.

One example would be our recent performances playing 4-4-2, so Mick is the system at fault for the performances?

'It`s not formation. Was everyone thinking playing 4-4-2 was a problem after 20 minutes on Saturday? I don`t think so.' McCarthy told the Express & Star.

He continued: "I don`t think Phil Neville`s goal came because we were playing 4-4-2. We`ve beaten Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City playing 4-4-2, so to change that now would show no consistency."

For those that think we should perhaps play three at the back?

"Tell them to mind their own business, For all those that think they`re in the know, they should just remember the one time I played three centre-backs at Wolves. It lasted 25 minutes - Chelsea away last season, and we got absolutely pumped 4-0."

That's you told, perhaps we should just stick to Football Manager 2011.

Well guys, I might be doing great with Wolves on Football Manager 2011, but I dont believe I would be doing so good in reality, so I almost never criticise his tactics :) Btw, the best Wolves forward in FM 2011 is clearly Fletcher. Scored some 28 goals in 29 premier league apereances in my 1st season :D Thats why I wish more game time for him in reality.

I blame mccarthy's squad selection.

We covered this subject at length in my report on the Everton game. Indeed, we flogged it so much to death that even lovesW, the most powerful advocate of the formation, lost the will to live.

Great, Mick, just the kind of words I expected from you. Tell these fainthearts to mind their own business. It is you who are at the helm - and the ship is not sinking yet, no signs of it. Very soon reporters will be asking you whether MM stands for May Magician. Southbank, I am still alive and kicking, thank you very much - though not as bad as our forwards have been of late. UP the 4-4-2 !

No signs of the ship sinking? We can still keep the boat afloat but (to pursue the nautical metaphor) we need all hands to the pump, a decent helmsman at the rudder and a navigation officer who can plot a course in the right direction.

Indeed. Furthermore Mick has already gone on record to say we shall be sticking with the system so all, it would appear, is done with. A match report and the discussions that follow obvously break down to formation and performance so I shall save any further anyalysis until then. This is proving one hell of a boring wait for some football.

Any reserve matches in the offing?
