Wolves make Upson move?

West Ham and England defender Matthew Upson has been linked with a move to Molineux.

Following West Ham's relegation the 32-year-old centre back who has 21 England caps is likely to want to leave the club and return to the Premier League.

The Express & Stars rumours page has reported that us and Queens Park Rangers have so far been linked, but I'd expect a few more clubs to consider a move if he does become available.

Vital Wolves Comment: Certainly worth keeping an eye on! Someone with the experience and quality of Matt Upson does not come along too often and he could be McCarthy's ideal signing this summer.

The problem we face, time and time again, is not being prepared to pay for premiership experience. Every now and again, Moxey is gonna have to push the envelope a little or we will always be on the back foot. We lost out on Scot Dann for the exact same reason last year and who knows how many other talented players we simply werent prepare to splash out for. Its not to say we go all pompey on ourselves... but we need 2 or 3 class defenders in this transfer, or its another relegation dogfight.
Ad Mant
Ad mant you aint said if you agree with Upson as a target or not lol ????
ODDJOB79
According to wikipedia, Upson has no contract since 1st june... I say lets offer him one !

Touché oddjob, neither did you. And I didnt think it was quite "laugh out loud funny" either, I mean Im sometimes humorous, but didnt think i was in this particular case. He's on a free, we pay his wages for a year or two, for the experience he'd bring - its a no brainer. But QPR are more likely to outbid us, and would he want a move away from London at this point in his career.?
Ad Mant
Like Ad Mant, I think that Upson would prefer QPR as he could stay in London. I also agree with Ad Mant's general point about the need to dole out realistic (but not daft) amounts of money to acquire someone who would effectively fill in one of our problem defensive positions. In a parallel thread I have pointed out that we do have the wherewithall to buy such a player, namely, in the value of our own players. if we have insufficient ready cash, we have to prioritize our needs, selling players where we are relatively strong in order to fill up the desperately needed replacements in defence.

I think Upson would be an excellent signing but ive said that on another post , 50k a week over 2 years if there is no transfer fee comes just under 5 million so yes as you say its a no brainer , QPR are having lots of names linked with them but Upson is not a London lad and has played for Blues so knows this area well , depends what money QPR offer him compared to us !
ODDJOB79
Good point, Oddjob, but what worries me is his attitude. Reading WHU blogs last season, fans named him as one of the worst 'couldn't care a toss about the Hammers' players. Of course, he might have had issues there and with a fresh start (and at a much better club), he would 'put in a shift'.
Southbank60
Well, was considering this player. When this came to light I also was snooping around trying to figure a possible price for the player, when I noticed that his contract was up. No Brainer Award Winner of the Summer- sign him. Players in such a position are entitled by the nature of the beast to demand hire wages from clubs with everyone acknowledging the fact there is not a fee involved, and even at his age there would have been a price to pay. If it really was between ourselves and QPR then I would be worried- if we lost out. I reckon his agent's phone has been pretty busy so I will not get my hopes up too much. Right, I'm off to read the Johnson thread- see you there.
