Seasonal Loans - Good or Bad?

I am slowly taking the view that season long loans or loans of any type need to be looked at.

The long loans are allowing big clubs to retain their players and I think they are having a big effect on inflating the prices of permanent transfers.

If a player cannot get into the side he is with on merit, in years gone by he could be transferred to another club and gain playing experience that way, now they are keeping the player, someone else is paying his wages and if that player does well his value increases at the same time.

A rule should be allowed to loan players through injuries or illness but otherwise I think it would do the game good to make clubs use their own players and let other smaller clubs maybe to take a chance and reap the rewards through the transfer system if the player is successful.

As I said earlier maybe an emergency loan system to cover problems that arise at clubs rarely, otherwise you pay the money and take your chances as they did in the good old days!

It's a really good discussion topic. Taking my Wolves hat off, because we have and could well benefit from the loan system in the future, I do think there is an argument to be had to ban loans from clubs in the same division. The big clubs just keep hold of players for years and years just in case they eventually come good and obviously the bigger the club, the more chance they have the wages availably to take the risks. If these players had to drop down to the Championship (or even go abroad) then they would be less likely to want to stay in an amongst Manchester United's reserves set-up and would consider moving on to develop their career, rather than the biggest pay cheque.

Dont agree with emergency loans , why do we bother having a youth policy and reserve football if your not going to use them , It should always be put in place that if you take a player on a season long loan that if you take a player permanently at the end of that loan season a set price to pay was put in at the beginning so clubs cant rip you off by inflating that price because he had a good season ! , If a club does not put that in place its there own fault if the parent club ups the anti !!!!!

The loan system as it currently exists should be scrapped. It allows the top clubs to stockpile players without any regard for what is good for the player or the game. The ONLY reason for loans to exist should be for dire emergency situations only for the one specialist position - keepers. Other than that, no loans. Clubs should have to rely upon the players they own and that they have in their own academy ranks. If you need someone else's player, buy them. If the owning club doesn't want to sell, tough. However, even big clubs would soon stop stockpiling players if they had no way of farming them out to lower division clubs, which has to ultimately be better for younger players and the game as a whole.

Ideally i agree Ian , but it repeats my point , if clubs cant use a loan system it forces them to use home grown talent from there youth programmes , they will never get a look in the way it is now , I would love the number of foreigners rule to come in too , as you have a 25 man squad , maybe only allow each club to have 10 of that 25 to be foreign and the rest British , with Wolves i think we would just about get away with it , Zubar , Mouyokolo , Guedioura , Doyle , Hunt , Ward , Foley , De Vries , Elokobi and Milijas , I would like to see other clubs list just 10 foreigners and see how many can do it with just 10 out of the 25 ???

Just looked Arsenal Blackburn Bolton Chelsea Everton Fulham Liverpool Man City Newcastle Man utd Stoke Sunderland Spurs Wigan Albion , So only us Villa and the 3 promoted sides could do it !!!

When this thread was first posted, I did not really have an opinion. I was even uncertain about the benefit we gained from the loan of Mancienne, the person featured (at times an asset, at others a liability), which made it harder for me to come to a firm conclusion. Having read the comments above, I now tend to agree with the anti-loaners. In particular, it would solve a problem, which has worried me for some time, namely, the difficulty that academy players face when trying to break into the squad, never mind the first team.
