Walsall workout pleases McCarthy

Walsall workout pleases McCarthy

Our pre season fixtures continued with a trip to Walsall last night.

Goals from Michael Kightly, Leigh Griffiths and Christophe Berra gave Wolves a 3-2 win over Walsall in front of a pretty healthy crowd of 5,065.

Wolves fans again have to be praised for their dedication with over 2,500 making the short trip.

'I'm pleased with the workout, It was a good, competitive game and plenty of fans turned up to see it.' Wolves gaffer Mick McCarthy told Wolves Official Website.

He added: 'I don't think too many of us managers and coaches are fans of pre-season games - they are a means to an end,'

'It's all about getting the players fit for whatever league they are playing in whether they are starting on the 6th of August or the 13th of August.

Wolves first half XI: Hennessey, Stearman, Batth, Craddock, Elokobi, Kightly, Henry, Foley, Hunt, Ebanks-Blake, Griffiths.

Wolves Second half XI: Ikeme, Kostrna, Johnson, Berra, Ward, Hammill, Milijas, Davis, Jarvis, Keogh, Doyle.

Vital Wolves Comment: We are next in action on Saturday away at Notts County.

Vital Wolves Article Comments:

Just got back from Walsall , must have been 4,000 Wolves there , Craddock and Stearman was way off the pace as was Blake , Kightly notched off a Hunt cross , was having a pee when they equalised not so long after , griffiths scored our second , looked busy but lightweight again , Batth had a commanding half , Henry and foley in the middle and didn't do much , Henry the more impressive out the 2 , second half , Hamill was quality as was Doyle , Keogh looked like a kid sulking all half , Jarivs again oozzed quality too , Milijas sprayed 20-40 yard passes but couldn't make a 10 yard pass hahaha , and Johnson hobbled off :-( , but breath easily you lot he came back on and just took a kick , nothing to worry about , but all Wolves fans **** themselves haha , Macken scored a screamer for Walsall , and Berra tapped in the 3rd , david davis looks a player in the making ( one deffo to bed in in the next few seasons ) and Ward yes WARD looked at ease at left back more so than left wing ! , Pie was nice but still had to have a maccy's after hahahaha

I know that these games are friendlies and do not count but if we ship four goals in two games against inferior opposition, we really do need to buy in quality defenders ... and quickly. Johnson cannot do it all by himself. Is Batth good enough and what about Berra's performance?

Southbank , 1 of the goals was an absolute screamer than no one would have stopped , we conceded 2 goals with craddock and danny batth centre halfs , and as i said Craddock and Stearman looked off the pace i mean the 2 goals we conceded in the first half , it was a reserve side we fielded with the exception of Hunt Henry and Hennessey and it was Hunts first game back , We never looked like conceding when it was Ward Berra Johnson and that young slovak Kostrna at the back who impressed me , reminded me of Jamie smith with his speed , 2nd half wolves should have had 4 or 5 goals , dominated as it was a more attacking side , no reason to panic at all from what i had seen , like we said friendlies are all about fitness and it just seemed the 2nd half side looked much sharper than the 1st half side , No Vokes or Mendaiz Laing so maybe they will be loaned out ? and you could tell Batth had someone watching him as he tried to win everything , Im glad i never made it pro though , the warm down the players do was making me feel sick hahahaha

As i said Berra and Johnson were very commanding , signs of a partnership , put it this way Berra wont have to win as many headers as Johnson looks unbeatable in the air lol , Batth is good in the air and composed but looks a bit too big , very broad , and i think he would struggle with tricky fast forwards , I think he would play championship footie with ease and you can see why Sheff Wed and Charlton are battling for his loan signature , Prem quality not so sure but cant judge after 45 minutes can you really , Craddock was woeful , an ageing Jon Macken beat him in the air all the time and was his mistake as he slipped for the ball to drop to Macken who just smashed it , to say there was no Zubar O'Hara Guiedioura an Fletcher , 4 players with that something extra Wolves played some good stuff 2nd half , I would go to say Hamill will put more pressure on Hunt and Jarvo than Kightly , He looked well good !

Oh and was good to see Ikeme back !

Excellent to have a bit of a review from the game oddjob, don't forget to use the suggest an article page in future, much easier to get it online from there rather than the article comments! :)

So who is this young Kostrna chap then, 2nd game ive seen him in the starting line up... I presume he is on trial ? I would like to see a squad closer to the one we will start the season with playing sooner rather than later so they can start building a rapport with each other.

Kostrna is from the Academy, 18 year old i believe, could be a good one for the future.

Cheers Akela , Will do , Doubt i will be able to report much from Park Head as I'll be too drunk !!! haha , Admant all the players know each other except Johnson and he has been partnered with Berra both times so that tells you McCarthy likes that partnership , Sharp he was signed from a Slovakian side , plays for there under 18's , Looked good last night but its a poisition we are already strong in

Why is zeli nt getting a run-out?
20/07/2011 22:05:00
Thank you. Good call Super- I don't know if they are holding him back from the limelight but what put the shackles on a player described as potentially the first 100 million pound player by the man who new him best from watching him day in day out. There is a strange lack of mention regarding Zeli; I guess time shall tell. Nice work on the reporting side Oddy- provided better information than the Express & Star that's for sure. I'd love to be going to the Celtic-Wolves game so drown in your beer, shake it off in the morning and get your report card posted! Look forward to it. If Mick has gone with Johnson and Berra two out of the first two then we already have a clear indicator of what may come next. I think Berra has done a very good job for us, and can still get better but he really does need someone better than a Stearman alongside him. You raise a good point however, the panic when Johnson hobbled off for a short period. The horrible fear of course is of him getting injured; if we do not sign another for the middle we will be right back where we started and we all know how that turned out last time around. They have to splash some more money. There is no better time than now.
