Ikeme on trial at Boro

Carl Ikeme has gone on a week long trial at Middlesbrough, with a view to a loan deal if things go well.

Ikeme had forced his way back into reckoning at Wolves, but could still be third choice behind Wayne Hennessey and Dorus de Vries.

'I've been speaking with Mick (McCarthy) for a while about this possibility,' Tony Mowbray told mfc.co.uk this afternoon.

'He's a boy I saw a lot of when I was at West Brom and Mick speaks very highly of him.

'The idea is that if we like him and he likes us, then on Monday we could take him on loan.'

If he goes its only on loan , monthly rolling loan , he deserves first team action so would be a good move for him , but as selfish as it sounds I'd always want him as our 3rd choice !!

From what I have seen of the player he is as good as WH. Henny is no doubt a great shot stopper and has improved with time but I think he lacks in certain areas; I still cringe when he comes for a cross even though he has greatly improved- also I do not think he commands his box well enough. Ikeme seems more assured and confident- if this is true then yes Oddy, I agree, he needs games. How many times does he have to go out on loan however before he is given a chance to show his worth day in day out in training. They must rate the new one highly.

I tend to agree with Yorkie on this one. Whenever I've seen him play (Ikeme, that is, not Yorkie) I've thought that he provided excellent back-up. Indeed, he kept Hennessey out of the team for some time and, like Yorkie, I think he is better in some situations. Wherever I sat in the BW Stand last year, fans around me would hold their breath when WH went up for a cross. Unfortunately, I will not be able to tap into the same cross-section of opinion this year because I have my named seat on a season ticket. In short, I was surprised when I learned that we had acquired de Vries. He may have come to us on a Bosman but we will have to pay his wages, money we could have put towards a CB or LB.

The last sentence there raises a point I had not touched on Mr. Banks. I would also have prefered to see us push one of the younger goal keepers through the ranks with Ikeme as, apparently second choice. I am pretty sure that new bloke asked what he realistic chances of a game were, unless he has outstanding faith in his own abilities, and breaking into the side regardless (that would give him a one up on Wayne) but no doubt he was told his chances are realistic (why else would a player of his ilk give up a number one shirt he held for four years- I can't imagine we provided a grand financial incentive). If this is the case Mick has his own reservations about Wayne much the same as us.

He kept WH out the side when WH was still in his teens ! , you have to name 3 goalies in your 25 man squad so it makes sense to sign another 1 dont you think lol , I dont think theres a better keeper than WH in the bottom half of the league , his kicking is second to none and shop stopping is awsome , he will improve on his commanding the area with age as all keepers do , you pair sound like you expect every keeper at Waynes age to be Schimecal ess hahaha , be realistic will ya , Murray was amazing at commanding his box but his kicking off the ground was awful , but we all raved about Murray didn't we !!

Well, Oddjob, I would rate a goalie, who is secure in catching crosses and who commands his area but who kicks poorly off the ground, more highly than one who kicks well but who is vulnerable to crosses. Having said that, WH is brilliant at saving balls head-on.

Yes but the pass back rule is equally as important as coming to catch a cross , I cant recall Hennessey dropping a ball off a corner that cost us last season anyways , With Zubar Johnson Berra and if he plays Elokobi WH should not have to come for many crosses as they should deal with them , but if its under his nose then yes its WH's job , he made 1 fumble against West Brom which was a shot , I might be wrong but i cant recall one clanger off a cross !

I take your point, Oddjob, but I am sure that you would agree that commanding one's box and having a safe pair of hands to catch crosses are more important attributes of a goalie than better than average kicking. Regarding the number of fumbles that WH has made, you and I (and all the people around me) will have to agree to disagree.

Number one he is not a great kicker, more of a lumper- not resting all the blame at his feet because the ball went backwards more than it went forwards last season, often putting him under pressure. He does not command his box. Not sure who was keeping WH out of the team when Wh was a teenager? If he was a teenager I would hope he was indeed kept out of the team! Anyways, who does this Schimecal play for? We should snap him up.
