Wolves pre-season ends with win over Zaragoza

The meaningless kick abouts of pre-season are over.

Wolves gaffer Mick McCarthy declared early on in July that he hated pre-season, but even he will be pleased with how things have panned out.

Goals from George Elokobi and Steven Fletcher were enough to secure Wolves our third successive win and winning breeds confidence and who can complain about that?

Wolves even kept a clean sheet against the La Liga side and avoided letting in a late goal!

To be fair to Real Zaragoza, they were a couple of weeks behind ourselves in terms of their preparation for the new season, but they still posed a good threat at Molineux.

'It was a bit more like a Premier League game because the opposition wanted to have the ball at the back and pass it out like some of the better teams do against us.' our Mick told Wolves Official Website.

He added: 'You have to be patient and can't go chasing it all the time and I thought we handled it well because we had to show some quality to beat a solid opposition and we deserved to win.

'Despite the fact that the first goal was a bit scruffy the second was a classic and I thought we were the better team.'

I wonder if Maierhofer has put his name into the 25 man squad with his very good performance?

I don't think Mick would base his decisions around 1 pre-season performance. That said it would be nice to see him adapt England and fulfil that potential that someone must have seen in him at some stage.

Well, Fletch the only other proper central striker.

Im concerned we'll be starting with the same team bar 1 that just scraped thru by the skin of our teeth last season... dont know what's supposed to be THAT different for mick to come out with "top 10" aspirations... the mind boggles.

Will we ? , Hmm Zubar will be playing , Johnson will be playing , O'Hara will be playing , Fletcher is coming good , Hunt will have had a full pre season , so theres 5 players we will see that we hardly did last term ! , Kightly's back and like a new signing , yes we would all want 1 or 2 new faces but its knowhere near the team we had to play for the majority of last season ! O'hara was hear yes but he wasn't the player he can be , hes had a full pre season under him so will be twice the player we saw last season ! , O'Hara is a signing as is the keeper as Johnson , so we have signed 3 very good players , dont make it out as if we aint signed anyone , rumours are still being floated about , maybe its a good thing hes sticking with certain players , Henry will be very good again without the captaincy , Ward is improving all the time , Berra is not a useless centre half , and if he gets consistent will be good , instead of moaning about how many millions we haven't spent , get behind the lads :-)

Oddjob in someways what you say is true and hopefully there will be a couple more signings but what worries a lot of people if there isnt and Johnson or Ohara get injured were back to the squad that has struggled for the last to seasons a defence with the 3rd worst record last season and the likes of Foley or Edwards does not inspire confidence i agree the team is geting better and if everyone stays fit or if injured hopefully will not be out for to long i dont think we will be relegated there are worse teams. But it has to make you wonder when the Hoff comes on as a sub all of a sudden he might get a squad number i mean wheres he been for the last season.

There is merit in the posts of both Oddjob and kiawolves, though I tend to err on the sceptical side. For instance, it would take a lot of improvement before our left flank is even within spitting distance of performing at an adequate PL level. As for the Hoff, he should still be plying his trade in the nether reaches of the Bundesliga. As everyone keeps saying, friendlies count for nothing and mean even less, even if they showed up JVD's inadequacies last year. Did anyone see him play in a WW shirt? We still need a quality CD and LB and not merely as cover ... and are we going to rely on Henry as enforcer again? Like the others under attack, he can play well but lacks consistency, makes mistakes and tries to redeem the situation by committing fouls (in his case, extremely clumsy ones). And, as kiawolves says, what happens when injuries occur? Last year's experience should have taught us the value of having quality reserves at our disposal.

There is still time to get signings in. I am sure that there will be others coming in. But I would rather get the right ones in than have someone who doesn't fit in. MM has brought the team a long way, and they have improved. Yes there are concerns about injuries etc, but every team has the same problems. Last season we improved, but just need to be able to perform not just at the big games but against the teams around us. Saturday will be a test, but lets not forget its a long season. Doyle and Fletcher working together could prove a great partnership, which we never saw last season. Kits back and a new player, everyone scrapping for places, I really can see us finishing mid table this season!! UTW

I have just seen a report that states that Liverpool are keen on signing Dann. If so, here's an example of timidity preventing us from acquiring the services of a much needed defender of the right quality.

So true Southbank if 8m why not sign he is going to leave birm so what is the prob we need quality not quantity sign now mick.
