Wolves pre-season ends with win over Zaragoza

The meaningless kick abouts of pre-season are over.

Wolves gaffer Mick McCarthy declared early on in July that he hated pre-season, but even he will be pleased with how things have panned out.

Goals from George Elokobi and Steven Fletcher were enough to secure Wolves our third successive win and winning breeds confidence and who can complain about that?

Wolves even kept a clean sheet against the La Liga side and avoided letting in a late goal!

To be fair to Real Zaragoza, they were a couple of weeks behind ourselves in terms of their preparation for the new season, but they still posed a good threat at Molineux.

'It was a bit more like a Premier League game because the opposition wanted to have the ball at the back and pass it out like some of the better teams do against us.' our Mick told Wolves Official Website.

He added: 'You have to be patient and can't go chasing it all the time and I thought we handled it well because we had to show some quality to beat a solid opposition and we deserved to win.

'Despite the fact that the first goal was a bit scruffy the second was a classic and I thought we were the better team.'

I wonder if Maierhofer has put his name into the 25 man squad with his very good performance?
danjsharp
I don't think Mick would base his decisions around 1 pre-season performance. That said it would be nice to see him adapt England and fulfil that potential that someone must have seen in him at some stage.
akela
Well, Fletch the only other proper central striker.
lovesW
Im concerned we'll be starting with the same team bar 1 that just scraped thru by the skin of our teeth last season... dont know what's supposed to be THAT different for mick to come out with "top 10" aspirations... the mind boggles.
AdMant
Will we ? , Hmm Zubar will be playing , Johnson will be playing , O'Hara will be playing , Fletcher is coming good , Hunt will have had a full pre season , so theres 5 players we will see that we hardly did last term ! , Kightly's back and like a new signing , yes we would all want 1 or 2 new faces but its knowhere near the team we had to play for the majority of last season ! O'hara was hear yes but he wasn't the player he can be , hes had a full pre season under him so will be twice the player we saw last season ! , O'Hara is a signing as is the keeper as Johnson , so we have signed 3 very good players , dont make it out as if we aint signed anyone , rumours are still being floated about , maybe its a good thing hes sticking with certain players , Henry will be very good again without the captaincy , Ward is improving all the time , Berra is not a useless centre half , and if he gets consistent will be good , instead of moaning about how many millions we haven't spent , get behind the lads :-)

Oddjob in someways what you say is true and hopefully there will be a couple more signings but what worries a lot of people if there isnt and Johnson or Ohara get injured were back to the squad that has struggled for the last to seasons a defence with the 3rd worst record last season and the likes of Foley or Edwards does not inspire confidence i agree the team is geting better and if everyone stays fit or if injured hopefully will not be out for to long i dont think we will be relegated there are worse teams. But it has to make you wonder when the Hoff comes on as a sub all of a sudden he might get a squad number i mean wheres he been for the last season.
kiawolves
There is merit in the posts of both Oddjob and kiawolves, though I tend to err on the sceptical side. For instance, it would take a lot of improvement before our left flank is even within spitting distance of performing at an adequate PL level. As for the Hoff, he should still be plying his trade in the nether reaches of the Bundesliga. As everyone keeps saying, friendlies count for nothing and mean even less, even if they showed up JVD's inadequacies last year. Did anyone see him play in a WW shirt? We still need a quality CD and LB and not merely as cover ... and are we going to rely on Henry as enforcer again? Like the others under attack, he can play well but lacks consistency, makes mistakes and tries to redeem the situation by committing fouls (in his case, extremely clumsy ones). And, as kiawolves says, what happens when injuries occur? Last year's experience should have taught us the value of having quality reserves at our disposal.

There is still time to get signings in. I am sure that there will be others coming in. But I would rather get the right ones in than have someone who doesn't fit in. MM has brought the team a long way, and they have improved. Yes there are concerns about injuries etc, but every team has the same problems. Last season we improved, but just need to be able to perform not just at the big games but against the teams around us. Saturday will be a test, but lets not forget its a long season. Doyle and Fletcher working together could prove a great partnership, which we never saw last season. Kits back and a new player, everyone scrapping for places, I really can see us finishing mid table this season!! UTW
SUPERSPARKES
I have just seen a report that states that Liverpool are keen on signing Dann. If so, here's an example of timidity preventing us from acquiring the services of a much needed defender of the right quality.
Southbank60
So true Southbank if 8m why not sign he is going to leave birm so what is the prob we need quality not quantity sign now mick.
kiawolves
Kia every team like us has that problem , Albion lose Odemwingie or Foster ? , Villa are weak when Collins doesn't play , Fulham without Hangelaand , Bolton without Cahill , even the big sides like in the big games united without Vidic or Chelsea without Terry , they have good players to come in but not world class , we had tons of injuries last season without O'hara and Johnson and survived , and SB if you think about it we would all love Dann but we are never going to pay a player 65k a week so it was always a non starter if thats the case ! If we can keep most our players fit for the length of the season , then 11th-14th is a realistic target and id be satisfied with that , ifs buts n maybes happen with all squads regarding injuries , if United lost Rooney and Hernanadez and Berbatov to injuries for a few months would you back them to win the league ? no you wouldn't , Its no suprise that when Drogba n Lampard started to get knocks and Essien Chelsea's title bid went off the boil , so its not just the lesser sides that get hit with injuries , Chelsea had knocks and had good players to come in but they never improved there sides chances did they ! , If you go into a season thinking oh if he gets injured , jeeez thats a right negative attitude to have ! , I wouldn't back Barca towin the champions league if Messi got injured i know that much !
ODDJOB79
Oddjob, if I recall earlier comments from you and others, the reason why we struggled last season was because of our injuries. If it were the same for everyone, why did we suffer more than virtually everyone else? It shows that we had an inferior squad, especially in defence. I think the presence of RJ will strengthen our defence and eliminate some of the errors but one man cannot do it alone, especially if he gets injured. You may be right about Dann's wages and that's probably a reason why we have not put in an offer, hoping that he and Birmingham would lower their sights as the season approached. Now, we will not be able to negotiate at all.
Southbank60
Oddjob i understand your comments about injuries and yes evert team gets them as i have allready said i think we only stayed up because of danns injury for the brums which just showed they did not have the cover. We have bought one defender in if he gets injured we are then back to the defence that had the 3rd worst in the prem last season so in my eyes you need to sign more than one defender surely you agree with that. Now MM has said he is happy with the LB position and is not really looking for anyone but i thought we are supposed to be improving the squad not standing still we have 5-6 prem players the rest are still trying to prove it and some are just not good enough. I also read Moxey thinks we could be challengeing for europa or the champions league in 3-4 seasons is he kidding you need top players for that and the three Ms seem to think we have them if this is the extent of are transfer activity they must be living in a fantasy world.
kiawolves
We have done more in the way of transfers than most, there just isn't the movement, apart from Man city, Man Utd. Lots and lots of rumours. The next two weeks will see some moves, and I am sure that we will be involved in that! The squad will improve, and don't forget we have got some good youngsters, who I would like to play a part this season!
SUPERSPARKES
And now Doyle is out for 2-3 weeks! Just shows you how important it is to have good back unlike as at WW where we have average back-up as our front-line defenders.
Southbank60
We did have more injuries than everyone else and we survived SB , we cant have a season like last injury wise hopefully , stop trying to pick the negatives in every situation , jeeeez I would love to have Maldini in his prime at left back and baresi at centre half , it aint gonna happen so get over it and type somert positive for a change !
ODDJOB79
Oh and now your on about a back up striker when its all been left back and centre half over the past month or 2 , Fletcher and Blake can do a job , do you expect us to have 17 players all earning 40k a week in the space of 3 seasons , get real will you , your all so negative on this site , ***** it , rather chat with lads on facebook who know nothing about football but always say COME ON WOLVES , WOLVES AY WE , not oh we aint signed him or we aint signed that player blah blah , your just pure greed and forget where this club was 5 years ago !
ODDJOB79
There you go again, Oddjob, trotting out all your usual platitudes when contradicted, but this time you've added a classic. So, you'd rather chat to the lads on facebook who know nothing about football, presumably because they would not answer back, than discuss the real problems that true fans worry about because they might disagree with you? People like me want Wolves to do well (do I really have to spell it out?) but after coming within three minutes of relegation last season, some of us are aware of problems that need to be addressed. That is why we concentrate on the negatives. We have made a start with the signing of RJ but we still need another CD and a LB. For someone who is so astute in assessing the qualities of the players, whose names have been bandied about, you seem to suspend judgement when discussing our players. Berra, Stearman, Ward and Elokobi might improve (though I recall Ward being given the run around in one of the friendlies) but by how much and do you want to take the risk? And, how many goals does the team have to concede and how many games do we have to lose before you (and, more importantly, the 3Ms) realize that something has to be done. I don't want to criticize the players because they are all 'putting in the McCarthian shift' but life is hard, especially in the PL, and they must expect criticism if they do not perform adequately. I have just paid 100s for my season ticket and I want management to do all that they can to produce a winning team, within the limits of feasibility. It's not as if we don't have the money to sign suitable replacements. There is a problem about the wages of a marquee signing but virtual certainty of playing time can be set against that and in any case the person concerned might be worth a little extra, especially if he helps keep the team in the PL. All this leaves to one side the issue of injury cover, something which you argue affects our team more than any other side. That seems to prove my point.
Southbank60
Southbank i agree all wolves fans know we need strenghtening but you never hear anything untill a news conference is called as for a CH why could we not go for UPSON OR wOODGATE both or just one would have been invaluable and both with no transfer fee i know people will say injury prone but if there good enough for Stoke who finished above us and a far better defensive record alls we had to do was offer a salary then add ons for playing so many games and i still think a move for W Bridge would be good if we could work something out with MC if hes good enough for Chelsea and MC in the last 3-4 seasons why not good enough for us by the way has anybody heard if any movement on hitzlsperger.
