McCarthy waxes lyrical over Jarvis

Matt Jarvis received the praise from Mick McCarthy following Wolves win over Blackburn on Saturday.

Jarvis put in a superb performance and was key in both moves which got us the goals to claim the win after initially falling a goal down.

Mauro Formica had put Blackburn ahead, but within minutes a Jarvo's cross was met by Steven Fletcher at the back post to get the scores level at half time.

Wolves then took the lead early in the second half and we again had Jarvis to thank for winning the penalty that led to our second goal.

"He`s a terrific player, he`s an England player, He`s just terrific and what`s lovely about him is that for all his skills and his attacking qualities he puts the artisan qualities in as well and gets back and defends, it`s expected of him but he does it willingly." McCarthy said to the press after the Blackburn win.

He added: "That`s something that we`ve discussed and worked at, being more considered. You don`t have to go and score a third, win it 2-1, be cute and have a bit of nous and make sure you win it."

I have always argued that we should sell MJ if the price were right as it would allow us to strengthen the team in areas where we are weak. The fact that I have also had reservations about aspects of his game helped me to make this decision. However, Saturday's game turned my opinions on their head. I thought that Jarvo had made considerable improvement over the close season and I began to relish all the goals he was going to put on Fletcher's head. At the same time, the performances of Berra and Ward in defence, if maintained at the same level (with RJ to prompt them), suggest that we might not ship so many goals at the back. Even so, as a minimum requirement we need cover in CD, LB and IM (leaving aside the issue of players' inconsistency) and selling MJ would be one way of raising the cash. With money from the sales of Fabregas and Nasri, Arsenal might offer a generous amount for Jarvo. Can we afford to turn it down?

As i have said before should not be selling are best players but if MJ is to leave we want at least what Villa got for Downing and Young which is any where between 17-20m nothing less. The reason he can play with both feet can cross a ball whit both feet tell me can Downing or Young as i have said if we are going to move forward we need players of MJs quality in most reports they reckon offer pf 10 m we will sell thats only half what he is worth.

Absolutely, kiawolves ... and I'd want a lot more than £10m for him.

I really don't think that MJ will be going anywhere! And Kia like you said he has to be worth around the15-20 million mark, and are Arsenal going to part with that ammount of money. The club will want to keep hold of it's best players and it would take a great deal to prize him away!

The aim is to build a team worthy of the PL. I do not yet say ' a great team'. And I do not say it because it is not the real long-term aim of the Club, but because before that, the Club must be firmly established, and for either aim to be realised, retaining the best players is essential, and I think this is in fact the policy of the Club. If a player himself requests a transfer, that is another matter, but as far as I see, MM and the board want to hold on to the best players and build around them, not weaken a department to strenghten another. It serves no purpose selling Jarvis, replacing him with Hammill, then selling Hammill in turn when another 'irresistible offer' comes along'. If money is needed to bolster the defence, if it is deemed necessary to bolster the defence, that is, that money will be forthcoming - the dealings in the transfer market for the last two years is enough evidence of that.
