'If It's Football, It's Vital'

I'd rather have a smack in the mouth

'I'd rather have a smack in the mouth' was Wolves gaffer Mick McCarthy's reaction to the rather unsavoury incident involving Wigan's Antolin Alcaraz.

Immediately after the game, Mick McCarthy was unaware of what had occured between Alcaraz and Richard Stearman. He admitted as much in his post match interview with the BBC.

Referee Lee Probert also failed to see the incident, but thankfully it was caught by the various television cameras in the ground.

For whatever reason, Paraguay international Antolin Alcaraz can be clearly seen spitting at Stearman and has now been charged for misconduct by the Football Association.

He now faces an automatic three-match ban.

'What happened is unacceptable. I have spoken to Roberto (Martinez) and he apologised on behalf of the club.' McCarthy told the press.

He continued: 'I don't know where it came from but he's made a stupid mistake and got punished with a ban, and we all think that is right.'

'Personally, I'd rather have a smack in the mouth than be spat upon.

'It's the worst thing you can do to a fellow professional. He will be regretting it now and will have to take the consequences.'
