'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Alcaraz apologises for spitting

It was a rather disgusting act that Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz decided to do and thankfully he has acknowledged that.

If it wasn't for the International break we probably wouldn't still be reading about it and I certainly wouldn't be writing about it, but as there is very little else going on, the incident is still making the headlines.

Not that the incident deserves to be forgotten, but the focus certainly would have been shifted if we'd played another game since!

Bizarrely Alcaraz has claimed that it was all be accident.

He didn't mean to spit at Richard Stearman at all, instead the 29-year-old, who has been charged by the Football Association and will serve a three-match suspension, claims he wanted to merely spit on the floor next to Christophe Berra.

'I was having a confrontation with Christophe Berra and in wanting to show my frustration, my intention was to spit on the ground beside him, which was my way of answering the verbal abuse that I was receiving.' he told the BBC.

He continued: 'Unfortunately, as you can see in the video evidence, my spit, instead of finding the ground, regrettably struck Richard Stearman in the chest, and I apologise to him for this.

'I apologise to my fellow players, staff, supporters and everyone associated with Wigan Athletic for the problems this has caused.

Vital Wolves Comment: I still don't really see why he felt the need to spit on the ground and it all sounds a rather weak excuse.

I would have much preferred a full and sincere apology, but this wasn't it.
