'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wolves are always looking to improve the squad

It isn't exactly ground breaking news, even Wolves gaffer Mick McCarthy admits it is the 'usual stock answer', but Wolves will be looking for bargains in the January sales.

It's November after all, so the question was going to be asked eventually.

The media love the transfer window and they are desperate to hear that clubs will be making moves once the new year has been brought in.

It's usually a time for inflated prices and panic buys, but McCarthy has a shrewd history in the winter window.

Adlčne Guedioura joined in January 2010 on loan until the end of the season from Belgian side Charleroi, which then became a permanent move in the summer.

Then Jamie O'Hara was snapped up from Spurs in January 2011 in a similar move that was also made permanent in August.

'We'll be looking in January definitely, We'll be looking to do something. Myself and Jez (Moxey) and Steve (Morgan) will sit down and have a discussion about that.' McCarthy told Wolves Official Website.

He continued: 'Myself and Dave (Bowman, Chief Scout) and Taff (Ian Evans, scout) and Terry (Connor, Assistant Manager) are always talking about it.

'If we can get anybody it would be important to freshen the squad up.

'It's the usual stock answer, if there's players around that we can get and do something that can improve us as a squad or as a team then we'll try and do it.'

It has to be said that it is the media that love the window, i can see two or three players coming in, and like you said Akela a good loan signing till the end of the season! We shall have to wait and see. i think a lot of what Mick says is posturing so that we can get the best deal available, and we all know how press shy we are when it comes to transfers!!

Managers of course could pre-record such statements about strengthening and freshening things up come January. The summer alone was frustrating enough, and still fresh in the memory. If we did not bring in the four we needed in the summer I can't imagine they will do anything aside from a loan signing in January. There was no clarification over the summer whether Mick was satisfied with what he had or whether he spent the full amount he was given, which I think is the more likely. A home win against Wigan does not paper over the fact we had not won in the previous seven, and it does not represent a turning of the corner. At least the win and three points appears to have greatly relaxed McCarthy because the way he was presenting himself in interviews, it makes you wonder how unpleasant it was to work for him every day. The players continue to beat from the same drum and several of ours will hopefully come back from international successes with a greater spring in their step and take it into the weekend; the Irish in particular. The first eleven games have been and gone and whilst we have no choice to put those performances behind us we can't look any further than the table for where we are. If memory serves correct, we have matched Everton three of the last four times we have met them and things appear to be in the balance again heading into the weekend. Apparently their fans are to stage another march against their own board which serves to remind that all clubs have their issues and fans across the country have their reasons for 'dissent.' Once again they are off to a bad start- they will be looking at a home game against Wolves much the same as we were looking at the home game against Wigan- one they expect to win; they need three points to lift the gloom and their standing. I shall take it as a marker in measuring how far we have come to suggest that this is very much a game we can take something from, and quiet possibly the three points- good few years ago how many of us would relish such brain thought! A trip to Goodison.. yeah we can win that. A sense of optimism- I shall report to the doctor immediately to report a possible bang to the head. Bit concerned that Mick has insisted things would turn in a favour because as I say, I don't think a home win over Wigan says much more than their competing with Blackburn for the worst team in the Premier League award. I'm also concerned by Mick's repeated mention of the word luck. Luck and Hope are akin to flimsy and abstract. I felt lucky once when my number came up on roulette because the twenty spins before and the twenty spins after it didn't. Organization and application yields points. Lose and we can be right back to where we were two weeks ago. Win and we can possibly hit the dizzy heights of the top ten. Upcoming fixtures are of little comfort with trips to Chelsea and Manchester United on the horizon- our games against Everton and Sunderland stand out as those we may, and will need to take points from. Welcome back Banksy. Look forward to reading the report.

City Wolf according to Moxey we have money to spend in Jan plus money we can generate from sales to buy new players. The way he says it is as if MM told him the squad is good enough and we only needed RJ and JO and we would not be fighting relegation.Which has proved to be totally wrong we need at least 3-4 new players CH-STRIKER -LB and someone to challenge kh.

This goes back to a blog I wrote a couple of weeks ago concerning if money was made available to Merlin in the summer or not,if it was and he was happy to go with what he had then he will reap what he has sown.January is full of overpriced ,over hyped players who's agents only want to line their own pockets.Would'nt mind obtaining a list from January sales last year and see how many we would consider a good 'buy'?.Andy Carrol comes to mind!,35 million?,I dont think so and I've yet to meet a Liverpool fan who thinks so,a good player with potential?,yes but not the finished article and a good example of clubs panic as the dreaded window draws to a close.Good centre backs were in abundance in the summer for good prices,it will not be the case in January, that you can be sure of!.UTW.
Crete Wolf
Spot in, Crete Wolf. I have just read a report about cash-strapped Blackburn, who nonetheless managed to buy Scott Dann for a reasonable sum. But, as I argued in an earlier post, there were other reasons why MM did not even consider buying him.
