Wolves really should have stuck with Mick

Wolves really should have stuck with Mick

They say hindsight is a wonderful thing, but unfortunately many saw this coming.

Mick McCarthy split fans opinion throughout his time at Molineux, so it was hardly a surprise he would continue to do so immediately following his sacking and in the weeks after.

When the 5-1 defeat to West Brom came, some supporters wholeheartedly backed the Wolves boards decision to sack our Mick, while some called it knee-jerk and pandering to the boo boys.

Every end of the spectrum was covered.

Our front page opinion poll backed the decision, but only just, with 57% agreeing it was time to part company with McCarthy.

Then in the following week, the hunt for a new manager went through its twists and turns and eventually left some fans thinking that the whole process was a farce.

Throughout the process we included a 'Bring back Mick McCarthy' option on the vote for a new manager. He started off with just 22%, in second place behind Alan Curbishley who had taken 53%.

Then Curbs withdrew from the running when he turned down the job for the first time.

McCarthy's backing then grew to 48% and held a big gap over the likes of Steve Bruce who had only 5%, despite being the bookies favourite.

In the final days after the press had reported that a number of candidates had turned us down, Bring back Mick McCarthy had 70%, with Dave Jones 10%, Lee Clark 9%, Steve Bruce 7% and Terry Connor 4%.

Wolves now of course claim the managerial post was only ever offered to one man, Alan Curbishley, who went on to turn it down twice.

Whether the reports were accurate or not, it still made the whole process look like a joke and helped made us all look rather pathetic.

It couldn't have been good for the morale of the squad, reading that no one appeared willing to fill the spot left by Mick McCarthy.

In the end, as we know, Terry Connor got the gig, some would say by default, some would say to ease continuity following McCarthy's sacking, either way it became inevitable, so much so that I even made a tidy amount at the bookies.

Unfortunately though, the other thing I saw coming was this latest result against Fulham.

With morale at an all time low and the management team merely depleted by numbers not changed, the team drifted through the game against Fulham.

At times chasing shadows, with a real step up in quality on show.

Connor's appointment, while popular with the players as they undoubtedly do not like change, will not have acted as a morale booster.

Connor does not bring new ideas and fresh impetus, he merely continues the work being done by Mick, but without the knowledge and experience that McCarthy brought.

He can say all the right things, but the proof will be in the pudding, he has to show a good game, not talk one.

'Without a shadow of a doubt we still have the belief,' new Wolves boss Terry Connor told Wolves Official Website after the 5-0 defeat.

He continued: 'We've had bad results before and bounced back and we have to do that again on Saturday against Blackburn.

'We do get beaten and we do work at that end of the table so we know we'll be in the bottom three at times.

'We've done it for two years now and worked our way through and stuck together and been in the Premier League, and we want to do that for the third year running.

Vital Wolves Comment: We have to ask though, are we really better off now with Mick McCarthy gone?

You cant polish a turd Akela... the signings and mindset instilled in the squad, the lack of funding by the board means that this squad is little more than a lump of steamy *****. Not even Jose would be able to shine it up.

We should of stuck with him until seasons end,now he can say that he did'nt get us relegated and that he could have kept us up!. Now there will always be that doubt of could he have kept us up,personally I'd have kept him and got rid end of season regardless of what division we would have been in,as we have said before the decision was correct it was the timing that was all wrong.

After the WBA match MM had to go for reasons I have already put forward. Not only had he run out of ideas but the players were aware of the fact too. We needed a fresh face and new ideas and we should have tried harder to hire Curbishley. And Curbs should have taken the gig, even on a temporary basis. It would have eased his path back into management and he could have pulled it off. Even an honourable failure would not have dented his CV. But, I am not going to say anything against TC until the end of the season. He is in an impossible situation and I wish him well ... of course I do because I want him to perform the miracle.

The only way we will get a miracle is if we stop playing the donkeys especially Berra and Stearman they are a liability. We need to change the midfield and get players on who will tackle not just run back towards their own goal. Bring Hunt on for Foley and give him the freedom to roam like last season get Milijas on instead of kights and why not try Johnsson as the holding midfielder.TC just seems to be following what MM was doing nothing has changed apart from the captains arm band why not give it to Ohara some one who will shout and bully. But i know nothing will change on sat because i bet if Edwards is fit he will play another one who does not like to tackle and can not pass.

No one said that after the Newcatle match. A win against Blackburn and it's forward to the past by two weeks..... and I am not saying it will be a win against Blackburn. Truth is that the decision was a difficult one to take. I would have stuck with MM till the end of the season and be ready to take the consequences of that decision come May. Those who were so eager to see the back of MM should likewise be resolute in their views.

Arrrgh!!! What the hell is the matter with our board, coaching staff and players?? This is so frustrating. The board royally cocked up the signing of Curbs. He WAS the man. Coaching staff are unable to come up with any new ideas to stop us leaking/scoring goals and the players are unable win. If I was TC now I’d cut my losses. Accept that we will concede goals regardless of the formation and play our most attacking lineup in a 4-3-3 or 3-4-3. KD, SF, MJ, JOH, & SH all play if fit. Players are encouraged to be aggressive and if necessary, dirty (yes dirty Wolves were far better). I would rather see a player booked for a mistimed tackle than to see eleven men back off and back off and back and back off. Our defenders are so frightened of making mistakes that they fail to commit to any sort of tackling. Bassong should be moved into defensive midfield, he is composed, can tackle and can make a pass and Craddock brought back to play as a sweeper. If we don’t have a radical change in our approach (lets not concede early/keep it tight/try and nick one) then we will drop out with a whimper. Will the real Wolves please stand up and grow a pair!!!

BIG TASTY that is the point not to concede early but to have an attacking threat yesterday we did not concede an early goal don,t know how. But there was no attacking ability with Doyle isolated on his own as i have said in another thread this is just a copy of what MM did. Nothing has changed Stearman and Berra would have been better siting in the stands beside Southbank60 than on the pitch or maybe Southbank60 could have played you could not have been any worse lol.Jokeing all aside TC has to change things sooner rather than later or we will be doomed we still have a chance but things have to improve 100%. Starting with the defence and ending up with SF on the pitch from the start may be then we might have a goal threat by the way SB60 can you play CF AS WELL OR IS IT JUST AT THE BACK no pun intended.

Well, at the rate we are conceding goals does he have any other option aside from playing three in the middle? Everyone I talk to seems to think it is now just about the only chance of plugging the gaps somehow. Then again, the majority called for a change of manager at least 6 months before it happened so maybe we will see 3 in the middle at the back on the last day of the season when we are already long gone. No one expected 17th and above to have to register so many points just to stay up last season_ we could argue this season the division is looking decidedly weaker. I do not want to be in a 'thank god there were 3 teams worse than us' situation at any point in time but right now of course I would take that in order to see us avoid a catastrophic drop. At the moment, performances and stats alike point to us as the worst side out of the lot. I am tired of making suggestions really. We can argue for this and that but the club tends to act on the obvious when it is far too late. Maybe they will go and win the next 8. There you go. A change of approach.
