There isn't a huge amount of sentiment left in football these days.
But it is clear that Wolverhampton Wanderers are concious of treating Jody Craddock with the respect that a veteran 36-year-old who joined the club nine years ago deserves.
In that time he has made well over 200 appearances for the club and has always given 100%.
He is the consummate professional, but his career is currently at a crossroads.
He is currently a free agent with his contract expiring two weeks ago and is apparently not in Wolves gaffer Ståle Solbakken's thoughts for next seasons challenge on the Championship.
"I`ve spoken to Jody and explained the situation after he asked how things were looking.' the Wolves gaffer told the media.
He continued: "We already have a number of central defenders battling for positions, and I`m also looking to bring in another.
With that in mind Craddock has been told that he will not be involved in the squad that will travel to Ireland and if Solbakken signs another defender then he will slip even further down the pecking order.
"There`s an opportunity now to consider my position, which could still include remaining with Wolves if all parties agree." Craddock reflected upon hearing the news.
But why, would the club offer him a deal if he is unlikely to be played by the new boss? In clear football terms he wouldn't even be considered for a new contract, so the only answer is sentiment.
He is one year short of earning a testimonial and considering his length of service, watching him walk out the back door at this time of his career would be a difficult choice, but is it the right one?
