Should Craddock get a new deal?

Should Craddock get a new deal?

There isn't a huge amount of sentiment left in football these days.

But it is clear that Wolverhampton Wanderers are concious of treating Jody Craddock with the respect that a veteran 36-year-old who joined the club nine years ago deserves.

In that time he has made well over 200 appearances for the club and has always given 100%.

He is the consummate professional, but his career is currently at a crossroads.

He is currently a free agent with his contract expiring two weeks ago and is apparently not in Wolves gaffer Ståle Solbakken's thoughts for next seasons challenge on the Championship.

"I`ve spoken to Jody and explained the situation after he asked how things were looking.' the Wolves gaffer told the media.

He continued: "We already have a number of central defenders battling for positions, and I`m also looking to bring in another.

With that in mind Craddock has been told that he will not be involved in the squad that will travel to Ireland and if Solbakken signs another defender then he will slip even further down the pecking order.

"There`s an opportunity now to consider my position, which could still include remaining with Wolves if all parties agree." Craddock reflected upon hearing the news.

But why, would the club offer him a deal if he is unlikely to be played by the new boss? In clear football terms he wouldn't even be considered for a new contract, so the only answer is sentiment.

He is one year short of earning a testimonial and considering his length of service, watching him walk out the back door at this time of his career would be a difficult choice, but is it the right one?

I don't think Jody can do a job for us next season. It's a shame as he has been a great pro for Wolves and can teach the younger lads a thing or two. Maybe we could sign him on as a player / coach for a year, before him becoming a full-time coach.

"We already have a number of central defenders battling for positions.." What the F... WHO ??? WHO DO WE HAVE BATTLING FOR POSITIONS - this has made my blood boil ... Jody Craddock and Ward were our best (if not only) defenders last season, and Ward is a striker, so who do we have battling for positions ?????????? ........ Johnson, the complete **** who taunted Wolves fans at Wigan Johnson ? The hot-headed slow as pig *** Berra ? Or the absolutely hysterical Stearman who is never anywhere he is supposed to be and will throw in the odd foul just to alert us that he is playing .... Elokobi ? Get stuffed... Right Mr Solbakken, thats a first strike in my book - talking complate ********* - if Akela hadnt quoted you, I would have been convinced Mad mick was back. Fuming.

Wow. Talk about over reactions! First of all Ward and Elokobi are left-backs so they don't come into it. And he did say he is looking to bring in another defender. So Johnson (who was a decent CB once upon a time (and I beleive will be given a second chance)), Batth, a new CB and Stearman will be battling for a place. Berra might go I suspect.

He's better than the ones who pass for defenders; thing is he can't possibly last much longer. Bring in real defenders by all means and keep Jody as a back-up, perhaps even coupling that with some kind of coaching assignment, as 86l77 suggests.

Johnson defecates all over the club, and has the gall to applaud the oppositions fans, and you want him back in the squad. You and I are on completely different pages.

To be fair Wovles fans have hardly been welcoming to him! If he goes I will be happy if Solbakken wants to give him a second chance I'm happy. He IS a good defender and that is what we need.

Yeah, he's a good defender on what counts ?? It is a FACT that Scott Dann made him look good at Brum, and that we got the weakest link. For every one "good" performance there were 3 or 4 shockers - good riddance. . . Lest you forget, for the majority of last season we had to play 5 across midifield to act as cover for the shower that called themselves our 'defence'...

Although expressed in a more restrained fashion, my own assessment of R (made in an earlier post) is similar to AdMant's. I also agree with his assessment of the other defenders ... and it is clear that SS shares our opinion. Regarding Jody, I would like to see him have a role at the club, perhaps as a back-up defender and as a mentor/defence coach. He's the perfect role-model and one who would inspire our youngsters, who now might have a chance to break through.

In my opinion we should wait to find out who he SS gets rid of first because to me all the defence and most of the midfield were useless.Admant as for him Craddock playing well last season he only played i think twice then got injured why not say good by now but give the guy a testimonial. You cant keep someone just for the sentimentality his wages could pay someone else.

I don't think any of us can really say whether or not Jody can still do the job or not as we have not really seen him play for, well, some time have we. He has never let us down however and he has made so many comebacks and saved our bacon on so many occasions. Surely there is no harm in him receiving another year and yes, as is mentioned above, (I don't expect him to play very often) but he would be the perfect role model for the young and surely we can use him as a coach at youth or reserve level. I would rather have him doing that than the clueless idiot who is still loitering around the club and training sessions. Surely soon SS and his right hand man have to take a look at Coco and realize they have a clown. Clear out the circus. Things are looking fairly positive so get rid of him- no wonder he was smirking in the paper on the training pitch cos he can not believe he still has anything to do with the club. Jody one more year I hope. I doubt SS has made his mind up over the course of a week but sounds like the club will reward the player either way. If Coco has lasted this long then Jody should get a set of front door keys.
