Building the foundations

Building the foundations

For Ståle Solbakken, his job at Wolves isn't solely about getting us back into the Premier League, it's about keeping us there.

The Norwegian boss has had the full backing of the board, he has been able to oversee an influx of foreign players into the squad and has seen a number of departures from Molineux.

The backroom staff has seen its biggest overhaul in years and its all part of the bigger plan according to Solbakken.

"For me it is important to make a fundament (that'll be a foundation) now, so that it is not like we are scrambling our way through trying," Solbakken told the Birmingham Mail.

He added: "We have to have a certain base on and off the pitch to make sure that this is the Wolverhampton.

"And if we can take (it) step by step, and in a way be as good so that when we come to the next big, big step it is not like we have to start from the beginning. That is my aim and it is difficult but it is the only way."

One would have to agree with this philosophy and there are many examples of this in the Premier League today. But is it another indication that this plan perhaps doesn't solely depend on bouncing back to the Premier League at the first attempt?

Obviously that's what the fans want, but we've had a number of comments coming from the top, playing down expectation levels, almost to the point where this season perhaps doesn't even come into the long term vision?

Vital Wolves Comment: Is this season merely a building block towards Ståle Solbakken's 'fundament' or do you think the aim remains promotion at the first attempt?

I'm not too pushed to be honest! Long term better than short term. But when I look at the players we have I would expect at least a top 6 finish!

Push for promotion next season will do me... I think if we were to get there this season with a team in development, a new way of playing and obvious weaknesses, it would be a season too soon.. Relegation would likely follow and the loss of our best players again is something I would rather avoid... Backroom staff still not complete, so I am being patient, hopefully enjoy seeing the new guys settle in and playing good football, ready and stronger to go up and stay up next season.

sitting here watching the skysports saturday crew and watching leigh griffiths bang another one in, Mendez Laing scoring for Posh, and comparing them to the "attacking" option we bought in - for THREE MILLION no less, and wondering why the club insists on doing EVERYTHING the hard way. Boggles the mind, it really does.
