Devastating injury news for Hennessey

It had all sounded so great for Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

With the shotstopper returning from injury quicker than expected, Wolves fans were beginning to ponder who should be the teams number one.

Despite still being in the midst of his rehabilitation, the Welsh goalkeeper was almost three months ahead of schedule when he made his return to the football pitch, just six months after surgery to repair his ruptured cruciate ligament.

He wasn't being rushed, he was just playing 45 minutes here and there and was then having a couple of days rest to slowly build up his fitness.

But this week disaster has stuck. Wayne unfortunately injured the same knee in training on Monday and a subsequent MRI scan has confirmed that he has disrupted the repair and may need an operation to fix the damage.

"Of all of the players to have had such a surgery he has to have been one of the least likely to sustain a re-injury.' Wolves Head of Medical Phil Hayward told Wolves Official Website.

He continued: "His application over the last seven months has been exceptional and this was demonstrated by the fact he returned to play with such a strong and well controlled knee.

"It is difficult to find an explanation as to why this (the injury) occurred as he had met all of the functional benchmarks set and the surgeon was delighted with him.'

Hennessey will see the surgeon in the next few days to assess the injury and at that point a decision will be made on how its best to proceed with this setback.

Lets hope Wayne makes a full recovery. Without wishing to appear negative a second injury like this to the same knee could end up career threatening. As Patrick said we are indeed fortunate that Ikeme is playing so well.
