New role for Thelwell

Wolverhampton Wanderers have promoted Kevin Thelwell from his position as academy boss to the clubs new position of Head of Football Development and Recruitment.

It certainly sounds like an impressive title but what does it actually mean?

Well, rather than strictly sticking to the academy set-up, working alongside Steve Weaver and Micky Halsall, Thelwell will now work closer with Wolves gaffer Ståle Solbakken as well as the backroom team of Johan Lange and Patrick Weiser.

Thelwell will work scouting potential players for the first team as well as working towards getting playing to come through the youth academy.

It's a different role to the European director of football role which we see from time to time, because it is the manager who remains in control of who is signed and sold.

"Several English clubs are now seeking to make similar appointments and some already have this kind of position filled. For some time the board has felt this was a necessary step to take but we wanted Stale and the new coaches to acclimatise before we made the move.' Wolves chief Executive Jez Moxey said to the Birmingham Mail.

He continued: 'Having interviewed some excellent candidates for the post we felt Kevin had the necessary qualifications and track record to do a very good job. We are pleased he has accepted the challenge for what is a big responsibility."

Solbakken added: "It`s very important to have stability and continuity in the way we scout and develop our younger players across all age groups.

"Kevin and I have developed a very good working relationship and I look forward to working with him even more closely."
