'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cup upset ends Solbakken's Wolves era

After less than eight months in the Molineux hot seat Ståle Solbakken has been sacked following an embarrassing FA Cup defeat to non-league Luton Town.

Luton Town might not be your stereotypical non-league side, only adrift of the Football League following years of financial problems, but nevertheless they're still a Blue Square Premier Bet outfit and they still defeated a Championship side that didn't boast as many changes as many squads at this stage of the FA Cup.

It's probably fair to say that not many will remember Ståle Solbakken, he was an odd selection by the Wolves board, certainly a gamble and not one that ever really showed signs of working.

He made a few decent signings, but our Championship form was terrible and when player are still talking about the Premier League relegation hangover in January you know something is deeply wrong in the sides mindset.

But I still wasn't really expected an FA Cup shock. Perhaps I was being disrespectful to both Luton and the FA Cup when thinking that. Every year there's a big shock and this year we were it.

Internet reports suggest that Solbakken was given the news via a text message. Also following him out of the door is Assistant Manager Johan Lange and First Team Coach Patrick Weiser.

Head of Football Development & Recruitment Kevin Thelwell has been put in temporary charge alongside Development Coach Steve Weaver.

A statement on Wolves Official Website read: The Club would like to offer their thanks and best wishes to Ståle, Johan and Patrick.

Wolves will be making no further comment to the media at this current time.

Vital Wolves Comment: The media had already linked Gordan Strachan and Sean O'Driscoll to the job even before Solbakken was given the elbow.

However BBC 5 live's Midlands reporter Pat Murphy has linked Doncaster Rovers manager Dean Saunders with the job, although Doncaster have denied that they have received an approach from us.

Well done boo boys, well done spineless chairman.....he we go again!!!! Yet another sacking and the managerial merry-go-round continues......which has been will we pick now........Strachan??? Oh please.....or young up and coming manager??? Oh wait....we just sacked one of those. Fan pressure and player power rule at Molineux.........whoever comes in needs to be really strong in mind and body.....they'll have to watch heir backs both on and off he field. This whole last few years has been a complete joke and I am now getting really *****ed off with the situation. Early bird in march??. Do me a favour.

It seems as though O'Driscoll did have talks with JM but they 'did not get on', which means Jez refused to give him enough money to get us out of this mess. It also suggests that Saunders, with whom JM is currently talking to, will be more amenable. So, it looks like we are stuck with the same bunch of underperforming, complacent, conniving rabble. I hope that Saunders, if appointed, stamps his authority on the squad, beginning with a purge of the disruptive elements. Then, we might see a bit of effort on the pitch and some excitement in the stands.

The worst thing about it all is that we are going to appoint a manager with a lower standing in the game than Mick. A year on from sacking him and I have no doubt that whoever replaces Stale will not be as 'good' as MM. Progress? As far as developing a playing culture capable of getting us promoted and keeping us up, we are now further behind than when Mick took over in 2006. As for the traitors, it will be interesting to see if any manage to bail out in January, now that their work is done... Chances of exciting new signings in Jan? Between none and eff all, at a guess.

Therein lies the rub Winston, with each passing week i am more and more convinced this is nothing more than rinsing operation. Progress is not importance, making big profit is. Really sad to see Solbakken go, instead of the buffoons on the pitch, but he probably wanted funds, which the 2Morons arent prepared to let go of. And of course, we enter the transfer once again on the back foot too ... The last 12 months for Wolves have been absolutely comical.

So we are interviewing a manager that likes his team to play football. Doncaster are well talked about as being a good footballing side, so if Saunders brings a bunch of them players with him we may get some entertainment. The bulk of the players we have are not footballers and just lately not workhorses either, so where will this leave us? If we are going to appoint someone and not give them cash to develop a squad the way they would want to play, whats the point! Could get any sunday league manager to shout "turn the full back" with long balls and get the current shambles to "put in a shift" as they did with MM. I am really struggling to understand why if certain players were disruptive, Stale appeared to be a strong character that would have done something about them. I really don't know other than a 'vote with your feet' how we could change this current process of Profit over Success. There has to be an balance between to two, but one is way out weighing the other at the moment.

... and not just at the moment, MMD! A boycott would certainly concentrate the board's mind, though, of course, the club already has my money for this season. Even so, it will not be long before we are asked to renew our season tickets and that gives us some leverage. Those who pay on a game by game basis have a more immediate impact if they vote with their feet, though I am not sure what the proportion between the two groups is. In my case, I might not be able to renew my season ticket because of other pressures.
Southbank60
ha, everyone wants matteo. but there is no way he would come to us
Patrickdoran
Saunders has signed and bringing his back room staff with him

Well said, moron fans strike again, what they know about football would fit on a stamp, sorry to see Stale go he had a vision and the dross left by MM had neither the skill or football know how to see it through but as fans we should shoulder some of the blame because we had the ability to drown out these morons but we remained deathly silent they are the minority and so far have got there way I ask all loyal fans to vioce there view on match days wherever you are and show those degenerates that we the majority love our club and will not tolerate anymore I for one have never in 42yrs booed my team of a pitch and never will I moan like bloody hell outside and have to drive home to Somerset on my own with a smile or a frown please bring back my smile and support your club I was born and raised in We...B... think how i and my brother feel he lives there I escaped but it still hurts but i love my club lets show em all come on me babbies
davies09
I wish Mr. Saunders well.
johnkelv
I see the knives are out already on other sites.. Statements that he took Doncaster down!! What a lot of nonsense, he took over a bottom of the league side who had not won for 20 games and is now pushing for promotion with 'his' team. Do your research before you slate him, who did he take over from at doncaster?? Some of the fans favourite for the jobSean O'Driscoll
MMDukesee
... and he is Welsh, which is a real plus!
Southbank60
Trust Banksy to find a silver lining!!!,hes Welsh !lol, hope everyone gets behind 'The Colonel' and gives him a chance and may I wish you all a Happy new year.
Crete Wolf
I'm more than happy to get behind any new manager but that still doesn't take away from the fact that I think that SS was shafted by M&M. He needed time and support......he got neither.
Rustmonkey
well said Rustmonkey he was well shafted, i will support whoever is in charge and now its Sauders Morgans golfing buddy so maybe he will give his mate the tools to do the job
