Lambert's Newcastle Frustration

Lambert's Newcastle Frustration

Head coach Paul Lambert has been speaking of his frustration following defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend.

With Wolves hosting Rafa Benitez's side at the Molineux for the game, we lost out narrowly one nil on the day in what was a very hard fought contest and Lambert explained in his post game press conference to the Official Website that a potential sending off and penalties on the day, ultimately we just didn't get the breaks across the 90 minutes.

'I just felt we were the team pushing for a goal. The lads were doing everything I had asked of them in the first half and had got onto the front foot. But we conceded a poor goal. Price was off the pitch and I thought he had been running the show in the middle of the pitch. When you see the stats it shows that we were the dominant team and I`m not sure whether the goal should have stood.'

Pressed on the potential red card for the goalscorer on the day given his studding of goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, Lambert went on to say.

'It`s the referee`s decision. But I`ve been a player not so long ago and if you are on a yellow card, and you raise your studs, then you run the risk. Carl`s actually lucky that there isn`t more damage to his Achilles. If the referee can`t see it then his assistant has to and missing that is a big moment. There are always big moments in games and big decisions and we never got the break today.'

Going back to some positives from the match and a few negatives from our play, the gaffer knew we just hadn't tested the goalkeeper enough across the 90 minutes really.

'I can`t fault the lads for the way they are playing. We should have worked the goalkeeper more with the amount of the ball that we had. We got into really good areas to deliver but there were times when we hit the first man or the ball just wasn`t breaking for us. It was difficult to break them down but I still think we are playing really well. I thought at the start of the season Newcastle were going to get out of the league and I still do. But we have shown we are certainly not a million miles away and I think it is a compliment to us that they defended really deep.'

He added.

'With the way we are playing we have come a long way and I expect us to be giving teams like Newcastle a tough game and I expect us to be winning games. We need to be consistent and credit to Newcastle, they have been really consistent and that is why they are up there.'

With back to back defeats now, Lambert was confident of returning to winning ways in Tuesday's match against Wigan Athletic.

'There is a really good feeling here at the moment. We`ve lost two on the spin now but when that happens you have to bounce back and if we keep playing like that we will win more than we lost. All we can do is keep playing the way we are playing. We didn`t get the break today but now we`ve got some big games coming up and you could see the atmosphere tonight was great. We just need to keep doing what we are doing and we will get that little bit of luck.'
