Wolves Announce Ikeme's Battling Acute Leukaemia
Carl Ikeme is to undergo chemotherapy after it was found the Wolves goalkeeper has acute leukaemia.
Pre-season tests and checks had seen 'abnormal blood tests' given by Ikeme. After further checks his diagnosis was confirmed.
Wolves released a statement on the Official Website confirming the diagnoses and how the keepers battle against the disease will now start.
Managing Director Laurie Dalrymple said: 'It would be an understatement to say that everyone at Wolves has been shocked and saddened to hear the news of Carl`s diagnosis. That relates to both players and staff as Carl has been at the club for a very long time and remains such an integral personality within the group. At the same time, we all know what a fighter and a competitor Carl is, and I have no doubt that he will take all of those attributes into this battle.'
Adding: 'Similarly, its goes without saying that Carl and his family will receive the full love and support that we at Wolves can provide - we are all with him every single step of the way towards a full recovery. There are going to be some very tough times ahead, but he will receive the best possible care, aided and supported by our own club doctor and medical team, as he embarks on the lengthy process of treatment. We are speaking to Carl regularly, and sending him our very best wishes as he comes to terms with this news and starts his recovery.'
Wolves went on to say as much as messages of support are welcomed Ikeme, who has made over 200 appearances for the club since coming through the ranks, and his family 'would request that their privacy be respected at this time.'
Shocking news and something you would of course never want to hear and wouldn't expect to. Yes, bad things happen every day but it isn't until it hits closer to home it can actually make you stop and think a little more.
It might not impact on too many Wolves fans directly - who no doubt have been effected by cancer - but it goes without saying indirectly it does when you're all part of the Wolves family and our thoughts and best wishes will be with Ikeme as he goes through the biggest challenge of his life.
Things like this also help put things in perspective too.
Again, good luck to him in his bid for recovery and best wishes to Ikeme and his family at this difficult time.
