Wolves enter the new year on a high

Wolves enter the new year on a high

With their win in a remarkable game at Bristol City on Saturday evening, Wolves stretched their lead to ten points at the top of the Championship and are very well set up to make 2018 a memorable year. Even pessimistic Wolves fans are in danger of counting the chickens before they are hatched now but there`s still 22 league games left in the season and injuries and misfortunes can strike at any time to make the job more difficult.
The game at Ashton Gate was a real roller coaster of a 90 minutes that wasn`t decided until the last minute. Much controversy centred on the sending off of Danny Batth with views split on whether a red card was justified. As he got to the ball first and kept his feet low to the ground I thought it was a harsh decision. And the decision spoiled the game for a while as Wolves sacrificed Bonatini to bring on Bennett to cover the gap in defence, and Wolves defended their position with Bristol not looking like finding a way through. But after the break Wolves adopted a more positive approach only for Bristol to exploit the gaps and take the lead. That looked like it might be a decisive advantage until the numbers were equalled up with the home keeper sent off for bringing down Doherty. Douglas, having hit the post with a first half free kick, scored from this one and from that point on Wolves looked the likely winners. Douglas then completed a hat trick of superb free kick deliveries by driving a last minute cross that found Bennett on the back post to head in the winner.
Having ended 2017 with an 11 game unbeaten run Wolves will be looking to extend that when they entertain Brentford on Tuesday evening. The reverse fixture back in August saw a goalless draw that was entertaining with plenty of good football from both teams. Former Walsall manager Dean Smith`s team play an attractive game and have some lively forwards and from what we saw that day its maybe a surprise that they aren`t above halfway, but they have won all three of their games in Christmas week and it should be a decent game on Tuesday.
Once that game is over there will be a ten day break to the next league game, with a Cup game against Swansea at Molineux on Saturday. That will likely give Nuno the chance to rest one or two players and the forward line in particular has looked laboured at times in recent weeks. And in January Wolves fans will be having one eye on the transfer market. Will Wolves make the temporary signings of Jota, Bonatini and Boly into permanent ones? Will there be a couple of new faces to add yet further momentum to the season?
All in all there`s a lot to feel good about if you are going into 2018 as a Wolves supporter.
