'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Should've Gone To Spec Savers

Michael Kightly did more than secure 3 valuable points for Wolves against Leeds on Saturday.

He also spared the blushes, and in all probability the eardrums of referee Michael Jones, who seemed to be the only person in attendance at Molineux who failed to judge that Manuel Rui Marques had brought down Kightley in the box during the first half.

After cutting inside Eddie Lewis, Kightly moved into the box and then cut back outside to step around Marques who cynically flattened the former Grays winger, only to see referee Jones wave play on.

And it left Kighly in no doubt that a penalty should have been awarded.

'I stepped inside Lewis and went to pull the trigger but I saw the other guy coming in so I went to cut round him as well and he just smashed me.' Kightly said after the game.

Manager Mick McCarthy certainly thought so as well, but as usual, was even more blunt in his assesment.

'Was that a penalty or am I going mad?'

'The only two blokes in the stadium who didn't think it was a penalty was the ref and his assistant.

'My lamps are fading, and I have to wear glasses now for reading. But it looks like I'll have to get some of those long-sighted ones as well, because if that's not a penalty, then there's never been one.'

As it was, 15 minutes from the end Kightley settled matters without the referree having to remove any splinters from his backside, which allowed McCarthy the luxury of a little wry humour.

'I guess I can be a bit magnanimous as we've won. But if we hadn't, I'd have been seething.' he said, adding with a smile:

'I didn't speak to the ref, there was no point but I've put my report in. Two or three pages of foolscap. And he can look forward to reading that on Tuesday morning.'

I think it's a fair bet to say that he wont be smiling when he does.
