'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Critical Acclaim

Jay Bothroyd's reputation goes almost as far in front of him as the grille on his gleaming Bentley.

A pre season cameo against Reading never quite made it to a bit part thanks entirely to his over exuberant celebration aimed in the direction of his onlooking manager, and saw him frozen out of the seasons opening fixture, and saw eyebrows start to be raised before the season had even begun.

The former Perugia striker was back warming the bench at the weekend as new boy Freddy Eastwood took the spotlight at Hillsborough.

True to form, the Romany Rooney didn't take long to open his account, and after being at the heart of much of Wolves attacking play, made way for yet another Bothroyd bit part, and he wasted little time announcing his presence to the Wednesday defence.

Racing onto a long through ball, and brushing aside a defensive challenge like tissue paper, he forced his way into the Owls 12 yard box and rifled the ball home

There were no gestures to the bench this time, and no resultant substitution, with perhaps both manager and player having made their point.

And while it was Freddy Eastwood that earned the headlines, it was Bothroyd who earned the renewed respect of Mick McCarthy.

Talking to The Birmingham Post he said

'It was a great response from Jay Bothroyd after some vicious criticism from me last week, which was absolutely justifiable.

'To be fair to Jay, he's knuckled down this week. He wants to play for the club and he wants to play for me. He enjoys being here and he's responded in the right way.'

Jay Bothroyd has his faults. For a start, he doesnt track back. But if Mick McCarthy is resigned to that side of his game, everyone else is going to have to as well.

What Bothroyd is doing, is demonstrating the attributes McCarthy has built his squad on.

Desire, hunger, and attitude, with a small a.

Leopards may not change their spots, but perhaps Jays can.

A lack lustre recall midweek in the Carling Cup found the former Perugia striker back warming the bench Would that be the game where the starting XI was - Stack, Foley, Craddock, Edwards, Mulgrew, Bennett, Henry, Potter, Kightly, Keogh & Eastwood and the subs - Hennessey, Clapham, Ward, Collins, Gleeson. Yup he had a lack lustre performance because he didn't play
