McCarthy Hoping To Keep Gibson

Mick McCarthy has admitted that he would like to extend the spell of on loan Man United midfielder Darron Gibson beyond the current agreement.

The 20 year old Irishman has made quite an impression since joining Wolves, and put in a very good showing against local rivals West Brom when he returned from injury at the weekend, which has given McCarthy even more reason to want to get him so stay longer, as he explained to the Wolves website: "If a player comes on loan, plays and feels he's developing then there's always a good chance of being able to keep them.

"He's a mature player for his age and he's a Man United player in that he doesn't give the ball away. He's very conservative with his passing.

"Part of the thinking behind bringing him here was that he would be good cover for when Seyi Olofinjana goes away to play in the African Nations Cup in the New Year.

"So hopefully we can keep Darron here and he'll provide that."

His current loan doesn't run out until January 19th, so he still has a while to go yet, but clearly he has made enough of an impression for McCarthy to be thinking this far ahead already.

Gibson is expected to be in the Wolves side that entertains struggling Colchester on Wednesday, with Wolves look to closer the gap at the top.
