'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Five Year Plan

Former Wolves and England manager Graham Taylor has spoken out on defence of under fire Mick McCarthy, in a no punches pulled interview for the Sunday Mercury.

With a hardcore of vocal fans happy to try and create instabilllity from the terraces, he draws parallels with his own time in charge, and isn't afraid to speak some home truths that may not be entirely welcome.

And confesses that he still harbours regrets about his time in charge at Molineux.

The reality is that in today's world Wolves are not a big club.' he says.

'They need to realise that the only way to achieve anything like what they want to achieve is by sticking to a four or five year plan - and that should include Mick McCarthy.'

Long term and Wolves don't always go hand in hand. In fact, they are now quite literally strangers and have been for some time, but any link between that culture and Wolves almost total lack of success in The Premiership era would seem to go straight over some fans heads.

He ends lamenting the fact that he was ousted before completing his term at Wolves and with a plea to current owner Steve Morgan to think carefully before treading down the same path with Mick McCarthy.

'I'll take two football regrets with me to my grave and that's what happened with England and not getting to see out the job at Wolves,'

'I just hope that Steve Morgan gets some stability and isn't rushed into any knee-jerk reactions.'

Will Steve Morgan have more patience than Jonathon Hayward? Probably so. Having funded a £2 million spending spreeit would seem unlikely he is about to change managers. For now at least.

But with Wolves sitting nowhere near their proclaimed goal of an automatic promotion place, there are those who are wishing very hard it will be otherwise.
